Lesson 1: Two Main Options For Website Monetization

You don’t need to think that there is only one way to monetize a website. There are many different methods so we are going to concentrate on just a couple of them. Let’s consider two options for website monetization.

One of the easiest ways to earn money is advertising. An ad is the promotion of a brand, service or product to attract interest, sales or engagement.

For example, you can charge a monthly flat rate per banner ad on your website as shown for an example of the forum below. An advertiser can choose from three different types of banner: side, top, and bottom. Each of them has its price. The side banner costs $7.50 CMP (cost per thousand), it means that an advertiser must pay this price for every 1,000 impressions of his ad.

Lesson 1: Two Main Options For Website Monetization

This way of monetizing has its features. Your website should have a lot of traffic, otherwise, that will be bad business for advertisers. If they don’t see clicks to their websites they won’t pay you. Also, you need to charge a reasonable price and it might be difficult for a newcomer.

To begin, we would suggest two options: affiliate programs or contextual advertising. Let’s learn more about them.

Affiliate programs for website monetization

The main goal in affiliate marketing is to gain a commission for recommending specific products or services on your site. There are a lot of pricing models, but we will talk about them later. The chosen affiliate program will show you different adverts such as banners, links, etc. You have to publish suitable ads on your web pages. When a user comes to the website, clicks on your ad and makes a purchase, you receive a commission. It can vary greatly from 1% to 50% and more.

Separately worth noting cookie duration. A cookie is a small piece of data which is stored on a user’s computer. The main goal of it is to help websites track your visits and activities. Typically, cookie duration is set to 30 days. This means that if a visitor comes to the site via an affiliate link and buy something within 30 days, you will receive money for it. Cookie duration, as well as the commission, can vary.

Contextual advertising

Contextual advertising works differently. Only relevant ads will be shown on your website. One of the most popular forms of contextual advertising is Google AdSense. However, there are a lot of alternatives for website monetization such as RevenueHits, Yandex Advertising Network, etc. All you have to do is put on a code on your site. Relevant ads will be automatically shown to your visitors.

For example, if your website is about music, AdSense might serve ads to buy concert tickets or albums. Put simply, the ads will match your site content.
